Three Firefighters Receive Badges At Ceremony After Promotion to Engineer

Congratulations to Andy, Danny, and Nick, our three most recent firefighters promoted to Engineer! This weekend their new roles were commemorated at Station 1 with a badge pinning ceremony with their families.

An Engineer is responsible for maintaining the engine (apparatus) at their station and keeping it at a constant state of readiness. The Engineer is the primary driver of an engine, and typically has higher certifications than a firefighter. They also are looked to as the resident expert on streets and addresses, fire pump operations and water flow questions. They drive the crew to the scene of the emergency and engage the apparatus in a multitude of functions.

Reserve Firefighter Saves Child While On Duty as Lifeguard

Berthoud Fire Protection District (BFPD) celebrated one of its own yesterday. Reserve Firefighter Jourdon Mazur received a life-saving award on February 28th for reviving an unconscious child while on duty as a lifeguard at the Chilson Recreation center earlier this month.
Mazur, who has been with BFPD as a reserve firefighter since November 2016, is also a full-time lifeguard at the Chilson Recreation Center in Loveland. On Saturday February 3rd an unconscious 6-year-old was pulled from the swimming pool at the recreation center. Jourdan, who was on duty as a lifeguard, went quickly into action having others call 911 while starting his life-saving efforts of chest compressions on the child. Loveland Fire Rescue Authority (LFRA) and Thompson Valley EMS were dispatched to the call and when on scene saw the child begin to become conscious.
Because of Firefighter Mazur’s courage and proficiency of skills and abilities, the child survived the incident and is back to life as a normal 6-year-old.
On February 28th LFRA’s Chief Mark Miller and the Board of Directors acknowledged Mazur with a prestigious life-saving award and commended his heroic actions. Mazur’s family, friends, Chilson Center staff, and the Command Staff at Berthoud Fire were all present to congratulate the tremendous deed.28468255_1666159303449475_8309852885500297216_n
