Poison Prevention in Your Home

KitchenKid Proof You Home!

  • Remove household products from under the sink
  • Cleaners out of children's reach
  • Put safety latches on cupboards
  • Keep vitamins and medications out of sight and reach
  • Keep all household products separated and stored away from food. A mistaken product could result in death. A mistaken product could result in death. These include cleaning fluids, detergents, lye, insecticides, bleach, pet shampoos, etc.

Bathroom

  • Throw out all expired medications.
  • All medications clearly labeled.
  • Put child-proof caps on medications.
  • Keep perfumes and cosmetics out of reach of children.
  • Never leave any sort of medications or products on counters, ledges or anywhere else a child can reach. Always put away after use.
  • Always read labels and follow instructions carefully when giving children, or yourself, medicines.

Laundry Area

  • All laundry and cleaning supplies stored and locked away in cabinets or high shelves.

Bedroom

  • Medications removed from bedside table or dresser.
  • Pour contents of expired medication down the drain or toilet. Wash out containers before you throw away. Don't leave any containers with medicines in the trash.

Garage and BasementLock in a Cupboard!

  • All dangerous and poisonous products put in locked cabinets or on high shelves.
  • All products stored in original containers.
  • Never store any poisonous products in containers that normally store food. Only transfer poisonous products to clearly labeled containers with child-proof lids.
  • Warn children of harmful pesticides and fertilizers. Keep your children and their toys away from recently treated lawns and landscaping.

General

  • Know which house plants are poisonous.
  • All liquor stored in locked cabinets.
  • No flaking or chipped paint on walls, furniture, floors or window sills.
  • Keep syrup of ipecac (to induce vomiting) on hand in case of poisoning.

Don't forget about invisible poisons. Make sure to have a CO2 detector installed in your home.
